Kitchen Tricks

Trick #1: The best way to dice an onion.

I recently took a knife/cutting class with my Mom.  We learned some really nifty techniques, and the proper way to dice an onion was one of them.  It will make your life so much easier.

  1. Cut the onion in half, leaving the stem ends UNTOUCHED.  Don't cut them off.  Tempting, but don't do it

  2. Peel the top layer of the two halves of the onions.  Leave the stem.

  3. Take one half of the onion, and slice it horizontally through the center towards the stem, but do NOT go all the way.  Leave a section untouched by the stem.

  4. Make slices now lengthwise criss-crossing your slice through the center horizontally.  Again, don't cut all the way through- leave a section untouched by the stem.

  5. Now you're ready to slice downwards for your dice.  The stem will finally be removed once you get to the end, but it's there to hold the onion steady as you dice it, so the pieces don't go all over the board.

Trick #2: How to get the most out of your apple

Just in time for Fall, getting the most out of your apple uses one simple tool that most of you have lying around in your silverware drawer that you rarely use:  a melon baller.

1.  Cut the apple in half from the stem down.

2.  Use the melon baller to scoop out the innards of the seed area only.

3.  Trip off the stem and bottom core portion.

Now on to that homemade applesauce...
